DWI Arrests: What To Do

Austin Drunk Driving Defense Attorney

Tell us about your case.

At Bristol Myers & Associates, P.C., we represent people in Travis County and throughout the state of Texas who have been arrested and charged with drunk driving. For many of our clients, a DWI arrest is their first real experience with the criminal justice system; their first real dilemma after being pulled over is knowing what and what not to do next.

After You Have Been Stopped…

  • Be polite
  • Have your drivers' license, registration, and insurance ready
  • Keep your hands on the steering wheel where the officer can see them as they approach your vehicle
  • Be aware that you are being videotaped and do not do anything that you would not want a jury to see
  • Keep quiet; respond to officers' questions politely but do not admit to anything or volunteer any information that could be used against you later

After a DWI Arrest…

We realize that if you are reading this now, chances are very good that the DWI arrest has already occurred, that you have probably been released from custody, and that much of this advice comes too late. If this is the case, we recommend that you try to remember as much as you can and jot down notes about the circumstances of the stop and subsequent DWI arrest. What did you say or do? What did the officers say or do? How was the field sobriety test given? Anything you can remember may be helpful to your defense.
